Oil industry
Calcium carbonate is widely used in the oil industry because it is heavy and increases the density of drilling fluids, and helps in controlling downhole pressure. Calcium carbonate is used as a bridging and weighing agent used in drilling. It is used to increase the density of mud and is preferred over barite because it is acid soluble. It is milled in three sizes coarse, medium and fine, and is basically a bridging and weighing agent to control fluid loss and density. It can be used in both oil and water based fluid systems. It is mainly used as a weighing agent where it is used for bridging and leakage control Advantages: Acid soluble and helps in cleaning effective bridging agent, excellent inert and insoluble weighing agent.
